As part of the Human Rights Watch Film Festival co-presented by Asian CineVision, Silenced Voices by Beate Arnestad exposes the life of Sri Lankan journalists in exile, she seeks out various reporters who has risked their lives over and over to highlight the human rights violations that’s taking place in their home land. It’s been reported nearly 25 journalists have been killed there since 1992, at least 10 of whom were deliberately targeted by suspected government or opposing Tamil Tiger forces. One specific story is of Lasantha Wickrematunge, he was gunned down by eight men in broad daylight in the capital, Colombo; leaving his newly wed wife a widow only a few days after the wedding. Being the editor in chief of the critical newspaper the Morning Leader, Wickrematunge was also a fierce opponent of the Sri Lankan government. Ever since his death, his wife has been relocated to New York and continuing to fight for justice.
