A speech-impaired veteran lives with his adopted daughter, Mei. After becoming a singer, she tries to leave her ghetto life behind. Despite the genre’s waning, the all-time classic mandarin musical melodrama is a historical part of of the many elements that make up today’s Taiwanese cinema: the motifs of family, neighborhood and pop culture; and, after 1981, the use of Taiwanese Hokkien after language restrictions were lifted.
