OPENS
IN NYC THIS FRIDAY, AUGUST 6
CINEMA VILLAGE, 22 E. 12th Street
DON’T MISS IT! LAST LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE, a
beguiling and richly stylized story of romance and
loneliness, brings together three of the most exciting
talents in current world cinema: Thai director Pen-ek
Ratanaruang, Japanese superstar Asano Tadanobu (star
of Takeshi Kitano’s Zatoichi) and legendary
cinematographer Christopher Doyle (In the Mood for
Love, The Quiet American).
A hit at film festivals worldwide, including Venice,
Toronto, Sundance and Tribeca, the film won Asano
Tadanobu a best actor prize at the Venice Film Festival
for his portrayal of Kenji, an ex-gangster hiding
out in Bangkok under the guise of a mild-mannered
and quasi-suicidal librarian. When he fumbles his
way into the life of feisty Thai bar-girl Noi (stunning
newcomer Sinitta Boonyasak), who is both mourning
the death of her sister and bent on emigrating to
Japan, a strange and moving cross-cultural romance
sputters to life, played out in the confines of her
run-down house.
Enriched by Doyle's sumptuous visuals and a shimmering
minimalist score, LAST LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE is a funny,
tender, and quietly unsettling story about life and
death, sisters and brothers, and the strange way fate
has of bringing people together just as their worlds
seem on the verge of falling apart.
