MAYA
| 2001 | 108 min | India
Mon,
May 30 at 3:00, 5:15, 7:30, 9:30pm
Directed by Digvijay Singh
With a quiet unflinching eye, the award-winning
MAYA tackles the tradition of child abuse which
still devastates many girls in rural India. While
MAYA depicts the practice matter-of-factly, it
is filled with so much humanity that it acknowledges
both the complexity of the tradition and the despair
it engenders. At its heart is the innocent and
resilient Maya, a 12-year-old whose life begins
to unravel when she experiences her first period.
Amid much fanfare, she is offered up by her doting
family to the local priests in a deflowering ritual
that "blesses" her coming of age. |

ARISAN!
(THE GATHERING) | 2003 | 129min | Indonesia
Tue,
May 31 at 4:45, 7:15; 9:45pm
Directed by Nia diNata
A box-office hit in Indonesia that features a
taboo-breaking gay kiss, Arisan! is
a feel-good satire that works on every level without
sliding into sentimentality. While the kiss between
the two male characters may seem mild by Western
standards, it is nonetheless groundbreaking for
a film that depicts gay life from the largest
Muslim country in the world. Arisan!
follows three thirty-something good friends who,
when faced with crises that threaten to cripple
their lives - one is forced to come out to his
mum - have to make tough choices. The film gently
pokes fun at the pretensions of the nouveau riche,
as Nia diNata's light touch keeps the picture
humming along. |

LONG
LIFE, HAPPINESS AND PROSPERITY| 2002 | 92min |
Canada
Wed,
June 1 at 5:30, 7:30, 9:30pm
Directed by Mina Shum
A touching tale based in the Cantonese community
in Vancouver, Sandra Oh (SIDEWAYS) portrays a
single mom whose daughter Mindy is obsessed with
Tao Magic. A reflection on a growing community,
this winsome drama illuminates the talents of
its cast of Asian, Canadian-Asian, and Asian-American
actors. |

KEKA
| 2003 | 93min | Philippines
Thur,
June 2 at 5:30, 7:30pm
Directed by Quark Henares
Quark Henares has established himself forcefully
in Filipino cinema although he still in his early
20s. His second film, KEKA is an unlikely combination
of romance, comedy and violence that strangely
works on the screen. A young call center operator,
Keka (Katya Santos), seeks revenge for the murder
of her boyfriend, who was killed by members of
a rival fraternity. While she embarks on her career
as a serial killer, she meets and falls in love
with a policeman with a broken heart. Henares'
film takes an inventive and mixed genre approach
to the noirish material and fashions it into a
black comedy. |

JOINT
SECURITY AREA | 2000 | 110min | South Korea
Thur,
June 2 at 9:30pm
Directed by Park Chan-Wook
JOINT SECURITY AREA, which broke all box-office
records in Korea upon its release, announces
the arrival of a major talent. Subsequent films,SYMPATHY
FOR MR VENGENACE and OLD BOY (which won the
Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival),
firmly establish Park Chan-Wook as one of the
most exciting and boldest filmmakers working
today. Set at the demilitarized zone between
North and South Korea, the mystery thriller
follows a fatal shootout that leaves two North
Korean soldiers dead and threatens to shatter
the uneasy truce between the two sides. Park
deftly explores the fragile friendship between
guards on opposing side of the divide, while
sustaining a taut level of suspense and tension
that drives the film toward its tragic denouement.

"A
surprisingly moving, tightly wound thriller."-
New York Times
"The
basic plotline of this pungent military drama... comes
tightly tailored in the Hollywood style. Its interior,
by contrast, is airy, subtle and playful, and showcases
the best elements of modern Asian cinema." -
The London Guardian
"A
highly atmospheric mystery-drama." - Variety
"Park
Chan-wook...there isn't a more ideal candidate to
be Jean-Pierre Melville's heir, or a better genre
director working today." - Time Out New

MARDI GRAS: MADE IN CHINA David Redmon
USA, 2004, 60m, video, doc *Filmmaker present
Mardi
Gras: Made in China tracks the bead trail from the
factory in Fuzhou, China to Bourbon Street during
Mardi Gras, poignantly exposing the inequities of
globalization. Filmmaker Redmon gained unprecedented
access to follow the stories of four young Chinese
women working and living in the largest Mardi Gras
bead factory in the world. Brilliantly interweaving
factory life with Mardi Gras festivities, the film
opens the blind eye of consumerism by visually introducing
workers and festival goers to each other. *Official
Selection, Sundance Film Festival 2005 http://hrw.org/iff/2005/ny/films.html#mardi_gras

SEOUL TRAIN (New York Premiere) *Filmmakers present
Jim Butterworth, Aaron Lubarsky and Lisa Sleeth, USA,
2004, 54m, video, doc
Seoul Train provides an unprecedented glimpse into
the little known underground railroad working to help
North Korean refugees escape one of the world's most
repressive governments. This is an epic tale involving
North Korean and Chinese agents, courage and deceit,
covert border crossings, and the terror of what happens
if they get caught.

MoMA
presents EDWARD YANG
JUNE 24- JUNE 25, 2005
Special
Discount for ACV members! Present valid membership
card and pay $6 instead of $10 for the film screenings.*
The Museum of Modern Art presents three of Edward
Yang¶s rarely screened major works, in celebration
of the publication of John Anderson¶s new book Edward
Yang (2005, University of Illinois Press), the first
in English to explore the cinema of the leading filmmaker.
Edward Yang assesses the considerable and original
accomplishments of the writer-director, whose work,
according to the author, combines the humanity of
Jean Renoir, the heroic gestures of Werner Herzog,
and the modernist sensibility and droll humor of Rainer
Werner Fassbinder. Offering a close reading of Yang¶s
feature films and a populist approach to his work,
Edward Yang is a long-overdue assessment of a major
artist. John Anderson will copies of Edward Yang at
7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 24, in the Titus 1 lobby
before introducing Yi Yi (A One and a Two...) (2000)

MoMA
presents "Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata:
Masters of Animation~ June 3- June 30, 2005
Special
Discount for ACV members! Present valid membership
card and pay $6 insted of $10 for the film screenings.
*Discount does not apply to the June 6 screening of
"Howl's Moving Castle" (2004).
The
Museum of Modern Art presents a 13-film tribute to
two of the most renowned creators of animation in
Japan. Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata: Masters of
Animation, which will be presented June 3-30, 2005,
in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters, covers the years
1974 to the present and illustrates the development
and scope of their craft and artistic innovation.
The exhibition highlights the range of themes that
concern both directors: from environmentalism in Miyazaki's
"Nausica of the Valley of the Wind" (1984)
to family dynamics in Takahata's "My Neighbors
the Yamadas" (1999) and loss in Miyazaki's "Kiki's
Delivery Service (1989) and Takahata's "Grave
of the Fireflies" (1988). Each director has a
distinct visual style and is drawn to a particular
type of story: Miyazaki's films revolve around complex
legends, often with children navigating magical and
precarious terrains; Takahata's films explore day-to-day
life with a hard-headed objectivity. Despite sharing
a common undercurrent of darkness, their films always
convey a sense of hope and an empathy with the travails
of humanity. The films are accompanied by a special
show in the lobby of Studio Ghibli posters, currently
in the Museum's collection.
