Proudly Announces
The International Premiere of
EXCEEDING MY HORIZONS: CHUAN YUN LI
A Benefit Concert and Screening at
the 28th Asian American International Film Festival
New York, NY (July
25, 2005) - Asian CineVision is proud to present director
Ray Mak's critically acclaimed documentary EXCEEDING
MY HORIZONS: CHUAN YUN LI about the prodigy violinist,
to be followed by a live benefit concert performance
by Chuan. The screening and benefit will be held on
Thursday, July 28, at 7 p.m., at Asia Society (725
Park Avenue, at 70th Street).
Of the young musician, violinist maestro Ruggiero
Ricci has said, "If China wants to have a great
violinist, they have one. All they have to do is look
after him." Chuan Yun Li was eleven years old
when he won the 5th Wieniawski International Youth
Violin Competition by unanimous decision. Today, he
remains the youngest winner of this contest. Touted
as a genius and prodigy, humble Chuan does not like
to consider such labels. Instead, he finds beauty
and admiration in a street musician creating beats
on a plastic bucket on the subway.
EXCEEDING MY HORIZONS gives a sensitive, intimate
look at a young man from China, a prodigy who delicately
balances his boyish charm with extraordinarily mature
life philosophies. It documents the pressures that
face young musicians, just as it highlights the support
system of family that help these artists realize their
dreams.
Following the screening, there will be a live performance
by Chuan Yun Li, accompanied on piano by longtime
collaborator, Robert Koenig. A Yamaha piano model
S6 was generously donated by Yamaha Artist Services,
Inc. Additionally, the outstanding violin being used
by Chuan is on loan by the prominent scientist Dr.
Mark Ptashne through Geoffrey Fushi, Chairman and
Founder of the Stradivari Society of Chicago.
A reception will precede the screening and concert
at 6 p.m.
The 28th Asian American International Film Festival,
presented by AZN Television, took place from Friday,
July 15 through Saturday, July 23 at the Asia Society.
Select films will also screen at the Cinema Arts Centre
in Huntington, Long Island (www.cinemaartscentre.org)
from July 29-31.
